Aries's shell was constructed in 2010, by XR&D, and she has been engineered and fitted by myself, with some joinery by Greg Birkett.
She is an 83% scale ‘representation’ of a 'River Class' Leeds Liverpool 'Short' boat (from the mid 1900s). These were the canvas covered, widebeam, working boats of the L&L between Wigan and Leeds. She has a steel superstructure of course and modern facilities with berths for up to five, one of which is the 'make up' occasional berth in the saloon.
She is gas free, with a Dickinson diesel cookstove and electric appliances (combination oven, induction hob, kettle etc.).
Heating is by Bubble (diesel) stove in the saloon, Refleks diesel stove in the crew cabin, Eberspacher boiler (to radiators and underfloor heating) and Braeaire electric heat pump when shoreline is available.
Domestic hot water, via separate calorifiers for galley and WC washbasin/shower) is heated by Eberspacher boiler or Braeaire electric heat pump (when shoreline is available) as well as by the engine. The galley calorifier also has an immersion heater fitted.
The main (bedroom) cabin can be either 4ft double or two 2ft singles and has en suite access to the shower/toilet compartment. There is also a 'crew' cabin at the fore end with twin berths plus a make-up single berth (sofa bed) in the saloon.
The layout and facilities make her suitable for liveaboard use.
Last docked for blacking:- March 2023.
Boat Safety Scheme certified to September 2027.
Available for viewing & trial at Salterforth (Leeds and Liverpool Canal).
